JAZZ IN PRINT (1856- 1929): AN ANTHOLOGY OF SELECTED EARLY READINGS IN JAZZ edited by Karl Koenig is a first rate reference on early jazz. It is a book that should be in every Public Library. Karl Koenig has done a splendid job of putting this reference work together.

In the section covering 1856 -1899, there is found an interesting look at what jazz was then, such as in the following intriguing articles: "Three Years as a Negro Minstrel," "Negro Music," "Hymns of the Slave & the Freedman," "Ragtime," "The Survival of African Music in America," among others. In the section covering 1900 - 1909, these articles are found: "Ragtime," "War on Ragtime," "Syncopated Rhythm vs. Ragtime," "Lafcadio Hearn and Congo Music," among others.

The section 1910 - 1919 has many articles, among them such as "Cadman on Ragtime," "The Flutist: Jazz -- Its Origin, Effect, Future," "Paul Whiteman Made Jazz Contagious," "Jazz Referred to as the Inventive Spirit of America," among others. There are sections containing publications from the individual years of 1925, 1926, 1927, 1928, and 1929.

This fine reference also contains an index of names, and an index of titles. Many American jazz composers are found in the listings.

Karl Koenigs detailed preface is both informative and entertaining. This is the type of reference that is a social and cultural history of jazz as seen through the eyes of the writers of these time periods. For something unusual about early jazz this is the book!'This is an ideal reference book to have in your local Public Library. It has much to offer as a reference on jazz, and makes for fascinating reading!
