Other than some interesting phrasing on "Blue Bossa", some adventurous playing on "Variations on a Theme, By George" and a pleasing version of "I’ll Remember April," not much else to rave about here. While the duo displays nice teamwork, the playing is very sparse.
Cadwallader shows some nice touch and a melodic ear, but the playing is somewhat repetitive and lacks variation. Some attempts at faster triplet fills are occasionally clumsy. And piano and bass solos are often uninteresting, relying frequently on the same devices to peak interest and build momentum.
Nice material with good foundation, but it’s been played before...more inspired.
