Caterete by Angelo Nelson

Born in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais in 1949, Nelson Angelo is acclaimed as one of Brazil's greatest sidemen, having played for over thirty-five years. You can never be sure if the great one’s can outdo themselves, but just like fine wine, they get better with time. Nelson Angleo’s latest project entitled, "Cateretê" proves it once again. This was a fascinating and intriguing album and I really enjoyed getting to know this artist through his work. The album was recorded in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Nelson Angelo composed seven of the eight tracks.

The first track "Vera’s Frevo" reminds me of the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s, it was sweet, fast, upbeat, and lively, a combination of emotions running away with each other. Another track entitled, "Cateretê", was a strong song filled with drums, it reminds me of carnival and tribal rituals, my favorite was track number five, "Delirios do Mar", which was slow and romantic with vocals by Marcia Maria.

The album boasts eight tracks that are all pure genius. This is definitely a great jazz CD to add to your collection, especially if you like Latin and/or Brazilian jazz.
