Colors Of Brazil by Sheila Landis & Rick Matle

The CD Colors of Brazil delivers vocals that are as consistently lovely as they are lively. Sheila Landis celebrates the twentieth anniversary of her label Shelan Records with the release of this CD. Those years show in the effortlessly sensational quality of her vocals on these standards. Landis cut her musical teeth on Brazilian music, and you can tell it is her first love, but whether they are of Brazilian origin or old standards, Landis gives them a unique flavor. Her strong ear for melody and rhythm combine with her skillful scat improvisation to create an exciting vocal performance.

Guitarist Rick Matle has been collaborating and producing with Landis since 1988. His style of his finger picking has influences from jazz, blues world music and rock. It's the rock influence that brings a new flavor to Landis work and stretches her repertoire, creating a rich and versatile mosaic of sound.

Some of my favorites on the CD are Summertime, with it's stylish phrasing, Angel Says, a sweet, yearning tune, and the beautiful Brazilian standards Agua de Beber and Girl From Ipanema. The explosive Parenthe- Seizure remix, and the pensive I Don't Speak Your Language one of three cuts penned by Landis.

Landis draws her vocal influences from classic jazz vocalists Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday as well as from modern artists like Joni Mitchell and the late Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Landis is widely known and appreciated in Detroit and the whole state of Michigan, having received numerous awards and performed at many festivals. She has picked up interest internationally, especially in Japan. Try this CD and you will agree she deserves wider national recognition. It will make you want to go back and dig in the treasure trove of past recordings from this duo.
