Trio Con Brio, Live at 8200 Brill by Phil DeGreg

Trio Con Brio means "Trio with Liveliness and Spirit." This truly is an appropriate name for this trio. This group consists of pianist, Phil DeGreg, guitarist, Dan Faehnle, and string bassist, Paul Keller. Faehnle and Keller are both former sidemen of pianist/singer Diana Krall. Phil DeGreg is the house pianist at Cincinnati’s Blue Wisp Jazz club as well as a professor of jazz at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and former member of Woody Herman’s Thundering Herd. He has performed with many notable jazz artists such as Slide Hampton, J.J. Johnson, Junior Crook, Bobby Watson, Mark Murphy, Ira Sullivan, Carl Fontana, Richie Cole, Eddie Harris, Claudio Roditi, Stanley Turrentine, Billy Hart, and Ken Peplowski.

Dan Faehnle is perhaps best known for his three years with singer-pianist Diana Krall during which he performed on world tours, television shows, etc. He has also performed on many recordings for other jazz musicians.

Paul Keller leads his own 16-piece jazz big band, The Paul Keller Orchestra, and also a small ensemble and quartet in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He has toured with Diana Krall and Russell Malone and is highly esteemed as both a composer and arranger.

This CD, Trio Con Brio, Live at 8200 Brill, was recorded live at the home of jazz impresario, David Hall, in Cincinnati, Ohio. The album starts with the buoyant track, "Taking A Chance On Love." Minutes into the song you realize what a fantastic trio this is. They cooperate with each other seemingly effortlessly. Keller is especially brilliant on this track with his solo which comes full circle with DeGreg on piano. The artistry is nothing short of spectacular, audible in the production of these seasoned musicians. The next track, "Move," is as superb as the preceding. "NTK" and "Dreamer" are crowd pleasers and are consummately arranged. This trio is able to take the standard "Lover Man" and make it unique to their sound. The mood changes with the next two tracks "Exactly Like You" and "Dreamsville." This change shifts from an upbeat tempo to one that is both unhurried and evocative. The album ends with "Button Up Your Overcoat," "You Stepped Out Of A Dream," "LJK," and "My Shining Hour."

Phil DeGreg, Dan Faehnle, and Paul Keller are consummate musicians. This trio truly radiates talent that is instantly audible from the moment the CD begins to play! This is a must add to your collection. I have no doubt that you will enjoy it immensely as did I.
