Cohea's tone is polished and sophisticated on the ballads and on tunes that are done a bit up, he shows a bright contrast.
Alan Steger's Piano accompaniment is a perfect vehicle to showcase the melodic selections on this disc. Every tune has a beautiful melody and the solos by Steger reflect just that.
The tunes, by and large, are tried and true standards and they are given the respectful attention that they deserve, which creates a mood of bountiful delectation.
"All Through The Day" finds Cohea in a deferential Getz bag sound-wise. This tune is a mood piece that is sweet in substance and romantic in texture. Steger's backing is superb. "In A Sentimental Mood" captures this compositions tender feeling completely.
"Polka Dots And Moonbeams" This song has always been a favorite of mine and this duo's version is simply exquisite. Tonality, phrasing and presentation reign supreme.
"I Can't Get Started With You" Again the familiar melody takes on a new life as Cohea and Steger combine for a soulful rendition.
"Nobody Else But Me" A strong Getz feel to the Tenor, but with a bit more brashness,. Steger's harmonics are showcased on this piece and a few coolfour bar exchanges highlight this delightful Hammerstein / Kern penning.
This recording fills the bill of fare for the romantically inclined, and then some.
