The Mose Chronicles - Live In London, Volume 2 by Mose Allison
Pianist/singer/composer Mose Allison deserves his own chapter in the Eternal Catalogue of Cool, what with his wise, laconic, wry lyrics, his oft-parodied laid-back vocal style with its gently world-weary sound and gently irreverent jazz phrasing and his deft, crafty piano playing that melds after-midnight blues, progressive bebop and the Cool School. (His solo on "Fool’s Paradise" calls to mind Brubeck circa 1963.) Rock guitarist/songwriter Pete Townsend knows quality when he hears it - his band The Who covered the man’s "Young Man Blues" on their Live At Leeds album, and he also wrote the liner notes on an Allison compilation on Prestige Records in the 70s. As you’ve probably gleaned from the title, this platter is a combination of live album and career retrospective, rec’d live in London, England, where he is backed by a UK guitar/bass/drums team who are swinging, tasteful and terse, though guitarist Jim Mullen sometimes subs glibness for soul. All his classics are here: "Tell Me Something," "Your Mind Is On Vacation," "Molecular Structure," with a bit of Ellington for spice n’ variety ("Lucky So & So," "Do Nothing To Hear From Me," his takes on which make you think Allison wrote ‘em) as well as songs of a more recent vintage. There’s nothing new here for Mose Allison fans, just more of that same old cool-cat excellence. Casual fans and the beginner are urged to strongly consider adding this to their collections.
