Dark Days Exit by Felix Laband

Young South African synthesist and weaver of dreams, Felix Laband merges tasteful electronic innuendos from the past with a personalized stamp of modernism throughout this delightful project. Comprised of otherworldly treatments, delicate flute-like passages, quaint samba grooves, subliminal voices and other niceties, Laband injects a delicate muse into the majority of this set. It’s all intelligently designed, via the artist’s broad-minded musical panorama, perhaps translating into his own Magical Mystery Tour-type methodology. He conveys innocence with haunting melodies and polytonal vistas of sound. In addition, Laband injects dainty surprises, founded upon a childlike simplicity into some pieces. And with breezy patterns and hazy synth movements, he’s seemingly navigating the great plains of a far-away land. But the bottom line here equates to Laband’s heady and absorbing arrangements coupled with a highly entertaining form-factor. Chalk this release up as a top-ten electronics-based pick for 2005!
