Abby & Norm Group by Abby & Norm Group

Hick Licks, "Til Death do us Part" show great promise. And the group does a wonderful job on "Giant Steps," the only non original tune and a Coltrane classic. While it is apparent that this group knows how to have fun and really enjoys playing together, I can't help but compare them to Pat Metheny and Lyles Mays. They come awfully close. "Know It" is hard to keep up with and the musicians play too "outside." On another tune, "Devolution" I thought I was listening to "Some Day My Prince Will Come." Don't get me wrong. This CD has a lot of promise. But to quote John Ambercrombie, "Norm, Abby and the band exude an energy, joy and sense of humor, and desire to make music together." Listen and decide for yourself.
