Consequence of Chaos by Al Di Meola

This latest offering from one of jazz fusion’s most illustrious and accomplished guitarists is chock full of the style that has made him such a powerful and mesmerizing phenomenon. His return to playing the solid-body guitar only serves to further accentuate him. Al Di Meola’s brand of fusion and electric guitar has always been a force with which to reckon. In fact, when I was first learning the intricacies of guitar, Di Meola was one guitarist I found too daunting to even attempt to mimic. He was then and still is considered the model for countless aspiring guitarists. Always crisp, free-forming, free-styling, and just plain massively expressive, his style hasn’t changed. His circle of contributing musicians for this album includes (dauntingly!) former Return to Forever bandmate Chick Corea and bassist John Patitucci.

Di Meola, a Berklee College alumnus, sometimes offers concepts, chord progressions, and voicings that escape me, but that’s what makes his brand of fusion so special. I’m sure that there are numerous aspiring guitarists who seek a model after whom to style their playing. My advice: Unless you thrive on challenges and are 110% dedicated to pure, unadulterated skill, Di Meola is not the one to tackle. Check your egos at the door and just listen! This virtuoso has performed over the years with the likes of Jean Luc Ponty, Steve Vai, Frank Zappa, Jimmy Page, Stevie Wonder, Stanley Clarke, and Carlos Santana, just to name a few. Now how’s that for networking and career building?? The enriching dividends are quite obvious for Di Meola.

There is no one particular piece on Consequence of Chaos that stands out above the rest, although I do personally lean more toward cuts like "Azucar," "Santuary" and "Red Moon." All of the tunes are equally Di Meola at his finest. The riffs are lightning quick and razor sharp, and the melodies are well-conceived, appealing, and mystical. My hat will always remain off to Di Meola and his deep, often intriguingly complex, style.
