Perfect Timing by Barbara King

Perfect Timing, the debut release from classic jazz vocalist Barbara King showcases this lioness’ creamy textured timbres and inspirational voicing to the hilt. Her voice moves in elegant strides and lays back against the melodic slopes in a complete surrender that bends her vocal melodies to the music’s will. With a mix of original tunes and covers of standards like "Let It Be" written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, King’s vocals have a mollifying pitch that showers the listener in graceful wavelets and Carribean-like warmth.

She revels in the scat-chiseled cantations and classic jazz swells of "I Say A Little Prayer," and gently swaddles the softly drooling riffs of "Forever Young." Her vocal elasticity shines prominently through the title track while she flexes inviting shudders along the smooth rumba planchettes moving across "Your Smile" as Dave Valentin’s flute flutters prettily like an exotic creature. Her slinky glides are bolted to the lounging swells of "Tryin’ Times" as she presses the lyrics into the listener’s mind with evocative verses like, "Folks would not have to suffer if there was more love / But these are tryin’ times." The way she expresses the verses leaves an indelible mark on the listener, especially as she moves with the balmy rolls and amorous riffs circling "Ribbon In The Sky" making the words and music integrate into one.

A native of Brooklyn, New York, Barbara King’s music is all genuineness. She has earned critical acclaim for her singing style throughout Eastern Europe, Asia, and of course the USA. Her debut CD, Perfect Timing features impressive performances from Dave Valentin, Cecil Bridgewater, Eddie Allen, Jay Branford, and Nioka Workman, who all harmonize well with King’s own vocal prowess. King’s first outing is sheer gold. She meets all the expectations of a dynamic singer and one that can melt glaciers in the middle of a blizzard with her warm voicing.
