Who’d figure.... a jazz editor receiving a Christmas CD by Regis Philbin to review? Hmm.... well, maybe I’ll pop this bad boy in for a spin. After all, the jacket says the CD includes Steve Tyrell, Lew Soloff, Kenny Ascher. Oh no, it also includes a bit part by Donald Trump, the "Trumpster!" (gag!) But, you know something? I liked it! It’s a truly enjoyable Christmas album.
Recorded at Deep Diner Studios in New York City, The Regis Philbin Christmas Album includes all your favorite Christmas songs by some of the great song writers of our time--Sammy Cahn, Jule Styne, Irving Berlin, Mel Torme, Coots, Gillespie. There are no frills, silly words or strange notes just good old Christmas songs, played well and sung like they’re meant to be sung. And, surprisingly good vocals by Regis and wife, Joy.
Liner notes tell of Regis’ childhood Christmas memories growing up in New York, along with a few family photos. Nicely done and nicely reminiscent! Check out this great little album at hollywoodrecords.com. Geldman and Kelly eat your hearts out! Way to go, Regis!
