Modern Vibe by Arthur Lipner

If you like Dave Samuels...better yet: If you like Spyro-Gyra, featuring Dave Samuels, you will be right at home on this one. There aren't many musicians who play vibes/marimba in Smooth Jazz. Samuels and Roy Ayers come to mind right off the bat. Samuels tends to keep the atmosphere in a tropical zone, and Ayers is very funky. Arthur Lipner, on the other hand, is somewhere right in the middle. This really is a modern vibe, and there are no drum-machines, synth-basses, samples, or loops. Arthur's drummer-by-committee approach keeps the recording fresh and interesting throughout. Joel Rosenblatt, from Spyro-Gyra, kicks in some very nice performances.

This CD is an excellent example of what Smooth Jazz should sound like all the time. Just get some guys together who can really play with honest emotion, and let the thing happen. This is a very clean recording. It has the spacing that the assortment of musicians demands. Engineering is solid, and there are several standouts: Treasure Chest, Mood Vibe, Slo Burn 68, and the downright "nasty" arrangement of Ain't No Sunshine.

I'm feeling this one.

Recommended: for Smooth Jazzers who like to hear real instruments, and for Jazz purists who find it difficult to give Smooth Jazz the time of day.
