Soul Complete by Greg Cagle

This very Boz Scaggs-sounding CD is put together by saxophonist, guitarist and composer Greg Cagle and trumpeter and composer Rick Nash. They both grew up in Concord, North Carolina and met while working in basement bands as teenagers. Over the years, the two have worked separately and together in a number of different bands. Eventually Cagle lured Nash to UNC-Charlotte, where Cagle went for theater and Nash chose music composition. A little later, Nash studied studio recording and production while Cagle continued to build his catalog of original songs. In late December 2007 they came together again and began working on the 11 songs that make up this recording.

The closest analogy this recording has is to the early recordings of Boz Scaggs, a selection of good songs with solid arrangements in a style that shows great promise for growth. Officially labeled as soul, there is no mistake that this is where this recording falls. What sets Soul Complete apart from so much of the current fare in that genre is the clear-cut prevalence of a horn background section. Though not nearly as powerful as Tower of Power or similar bands, the stronger pop influence these composers bring to their music and arrangements makes these songs jump a little. The result is a surprisingly good recording. Equal parts Chicago horns and Boz’s temperament, Cagle and Nash deserve to be heard.

Instrumentally, Cagle takes some saxophone solos which, while truly pop oriented, fit well into the ambience of the album. He also does the lead vocals and has his own Robert Lamm of Chicago styled influence. This hip collection of tunes will surprise you and you’ll definitely want to listen to them over and over, especially while driving with the top down.
