Live at the Stanford Jazz Workshop by Art Farmer

Art Farmer is one of the true living legends of jazz that provides jazz fans with a taste of where jazz came from while yet providing a look into where it is going. Art having worked with jazz greats such as Dizzy, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins and many more has a first-hand connection to classic jazz roots. Art has been said to be a practiced master of the trumpet and flugelhorn still practicing four to five hours per day. Art remarks, "I'm 67 now, and I've been playing music since I was 7 years old. I love this music and nothing's going to stop me." His great love for jazz shows through in his desire to please the ears of all that listen to him.

As of late Art has switched his instrument of choice to the flumpet. The flumpet is a custom instrument designed for him by David Monette. The flumpet combines the straight forward distinctively brassy sound of the trumpet with the tender intimate sound of the flugelhorn. What a sound! Art asserts, "What I like about the flumpet is the wide range of dynamics. If you play a trumpet softly, you lose the sound. With the flumpet I can be more interpretive and creative." In this live performance we capture Art and his seasoned sidemen in rare form letting the rhythms free-flow around polished melodies. The performance opens up with Monk's "I mean you", the group swingin' along this catchy tune, laying a foundation to this classic display of traditional jazz favorites. On the Harold Land written piece "Rapture", we are introduced to a peaceful melody of piano into bass into sax into flumpet creating a blend of sound not easily matched. Art and Harold Land (Tenor Sax) take turns exchanging the graceful lead each showcasing without showboating while giving the audience a musical experience to touch the soul of the music lover in all of us. If you are a lover of great live energetic jazz, then check this one out! Enjoy the jazz!
