Pianovagando by Beppe Crovella

Italian keyboardist Beppe Crovella wears many musical hats. Longtime member of estimable progressive-rock band, Arti & Mestieri and composer for cartoons amid avant-garde proclivities and other successful ventures, he embarks upon a solo piano setting on this captivating release. With fifty-seven largely brief, concise and interweaving tracks, Crovella induces gobs of sentiment throughout these endearing vignettes.

The pianist executes lush splendor and spirited romanticism, brimming with memorably melodic hooks. Yet he doesn’t overcook the innumerable moving parts and opts for a sentimental and soul-drenched program, consisting of lament, joy, and jazzy chord clusters. Crovella casts a rather poignant outlook, where these pieces spawn a harmonious paradise. And the pianist judiciously varies the session with R&B phrasings and certain movements that draw upon Mediterranean and Western folk.

Crovella generates quaint lullabies and touching balladry, while incorporating depth and his shrewd use of space. He doesn’t dazzle with Art Tatum-like velocities, but digs deep from within and conveys eloquence to complement the appropriate doses of power amid a sense of well-being. Regardless, Crovella’s deterministic approach occasionally sports an edge, to contrast passages that are underscored by a sense of grandiosity. Simply stated, his majestically woven theme-building exercises sustain interest. His manifesto summons a soothing outlook to counter many of life’s adversities.
