On her latest project, "Pretty World," Anne Walsh gives her audience a treasure chest of hidden jewels as she celebrates her musical horizons as a deeply expressive singer. Technically excellent, the 12-track disk is highly adventurous, containing polished rhythms and a simmering showcase of textual diversity amidst Walsch's flowing style. The pearl of this project is undeniably Walsh’s musical versatility.
Walsh says, "I’m drawn to songs that feel good, groove, communicate a truth, express an emotion or tell a story."
This comes as no surprise to the Massachusetts native who was first influenced by her own musical family. Walsh’s father was a baritonist who performed opera. His influence on her music is richly layered in warmth and come across as effortless, yet Walsh truly has her own way of defining jazz as she incorporates the musical genius of Keith Jarrett, Sergio Mendez, and Jobim on a variety of tunes.
"My Favorite Things," her rendition of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic sung in Portuguese, contains fascinating rhythms that are musically exhilarating. Walsh’s tone is pitch-perfect and it is a delight to hear how she takes chords in more inventive directions. Equally playful and passionate, Walsh displays an extensive knowledge of jazz performance by not compromising traditions.
"He Loves You," another favorite tune is a rich composition that possesses strong Latin rhythm that fosters danceable, hip-shaking response, which is noted with this genre. Again, Walsch provides angelic voicing while the ensemble conjures up an orchestration of groove. Her musical exploration is reflective of modern times where jazz aficionados greatly appreciate an abundance of syncopated rhythms that creates excitement with the music.
"Pretty World" amazingly provides a myriad of moods and cultures. Walsh gives everything as she establishes an architectural of musical styles including standards, Brazilian jazz, and pop.
The collaborative efforts of this star-studded line-up provide cannons of rhythmic sophistication throughout the entire production.
