Rockin in Rhythm: A Tribute to Duke Ellington by John Pizzarelli
Jazz guitarist John Pizzarelli has a penchant for covering the music of other jazz greats. And who can blame him; he does an impeccable job at it. On his latest CD John Pizzarelli is taking on the music of Duke Ellington with his compilation called "Rockin' in Rhythm". This CD consists of a little bit of everything from rag-time to big band and swing; just all round feel-good music that you are sure to "dig". But it is the ballads that would win you over more than anything else on here. Doubling as a vocalist Pizzarelli’s voice is heartwarming and romantic on "In My Solitude" and he continues to tug at your heartstrings with the ethereal "All too Soon". A wickedly good guitar solo adds great dimensions to the cute and mellow "Just Squeeze Me" and Pizzarelli’s version of "Satin Doll" and "In a Mellow Tone" could easily transport you to a happy place that you would never want to leave. The rest of the CD features "C Jam Blues", "Perdido" and "I got it Bad and That Ain’t Good". The CD’s closer is "Cottontail/Rockin’ in Rhythm", a track which starts off with swing beats and just as soon as you start to snap your fingers to the beat in comes a slice of ragtime via a rollicking piano solo which actually works well on this track.
