Jazz Fair At Chicago Cultural Center!

Southport co-founders Joanie Pallatto and Sparrow will be performing a set at The Jazz Institute of Chicago's "Jazz Fair 2002: Chicago on the Record!" on Friday, January 25th. Southport will also present "The Legends of Southport" with an all-star band, including Willie Pickens, George Freeman, Bobby Lewis, Bill Yancey and Redd Holt. Performances will be from 7:45 - 10:00 in the Randolph St. Cafe. Stop by the Borders Books and Music booth at 10PM after the Legends of Southport Set to meet the artists!

***The Jazz Institute of Chicago will present the 24th Annual "JAZZ FAIR 2002: Chicago on the Record !" on Friday, January 25th at Chicago Cultural Center, 78 East Washington Street, from 7 p.m. until Midnight.

Record Labels and Artists scheduled to appear at the Fair include:

*Delmark Records: The Salty Dogs of Chicago: Featuring octogenarian saxophonist and vocalist Franz Jackson.

*Chicago Underground Trio: Chad Taylor on drums, Jeff Parker on guitar and Noel Kupersmith on bass

*Premonition Records: John McLean: McLean leads his ensemble featuring Jim Gailloreto, Larry Kohut, and Karl and Eric Montzka.

*SOUTHPORT Records: The Legends of Southport will hold the hard-bop line with Willie Pickens at the piano, George Freeman on guitar and trumpeter Bobby Lewis. Southport co-owners pianist Bradley Parker-Sparrow and vocalist Joanie Pallatto will add a few notes of their own.

*Asian Improv Records (AIR): San Franciscans Francis Wong, and John-Carlos Perea and New Yorker Elliot Kavee will convene the Gathering of the Ancestors.

*Okka Disk Records: Tenor saxophonist Fred Anderson, whose quartet will be performing, has been a beacon for Chicago's avant garde for more than 40 years.

*Big Chicago Records: David Young's New Republic: Featuring Dennis Winslett, Kobi Watkins, Harrison Bankhead and Miguel de la Cerna.

In addition to great music, The Jazz Midway's exhibitors booths will feature local artisans, record labels, booksellers and radio personalities. Food and drink are offered in the beautiful stained glass-domed GAR Rotunda, and the exhibitors booths will be located in the adjacent GAR Hall.

The Museum of Broadcast Communications radio studio will feature a lively interactive discussion sponsored by the National Jazz Museum, followed by a Jazz Journalists Association panel discussion that will feature jazz label owners talking about the long history Chicago began with Louis Armstrong in recording the pioneers of the music.

Tickets are $17.00 in advance and are available via the Jazz Record Mart, 444 North Wabash Street, or at the Chicago Cultural Center Store, 78 East Washington Street. Tickets may also be purchased at the door for $22.00 each.

Other free events will be presented Thursday evening, including a reading by poet Quraysh Ali Lansana in honor of Langston Hughes' Centennial, along with a performance by a great Chicago sextet, plus a duet concert by the great Von Freeman and pianist Jason Moran. Saturday from 1 - 6 PM will feature free screenings of jazz documentaries and films, including Delmark record label and Jazz Record Mart owner Bob Koester's collection of jazz films.

Joanie Pallatto will present a concert at Old St. Patrick's Church on Friday, Jan. 25th from 7:00 - 8:30PM with pianist Bobby Schiff and bassist John Baney.
