Jazz Breakthroughs at Merkin Concert Hall

Merkin Concert Hall’s popular Jazz Breakthroughs series, hosted by noted jazz scholar and WKCR Radio personality Phil Schaap, offers two concerts in December highlighting the invention of today’s jazz masters. On Monday, December 3 at 8 PM, the program features the acclaimed saxophonist Joe Lovano and his Flights of Fancy. Of his recent recording of the same title, Lovano says, "It’s having fun and playing music with a free approach, so every time you play, it’s a new journey, a new flight!" Mr. Lovano’s trademark style of spirited free-form jazz and improvisation has earned him the title of "the most heralded jazz musician of 1995" by the Boston Globe and recognition as "one of the greatest musicians in Jazz history" from The New York Times. Performing on woodwinds, gongs and percussion, Mr. Lovano will be joined by: Dave Douglas, trumpet; Billy Drewes, woodwinds; Kenny Werner, piano; Mark Dresser, bass; Cameron Brown, bass; and Joey Baron, drums.

On Monday, December 17 at 8 PM, Jazz Breakthroughs hosts trumpeter Jon Faddis, whose inspiration draws from such greats as Dizzy Gillespie and Lionel Hampton, and his own ensemble, the Jon Faddis Quartet.

Merkin Concert Hall is located in the Abraham Goodman House at 129 West 67th Street, between Broadway and Amsterdam. Single tickets to each event are $22; a two-concert subscription is $36. All tickets may be purchased through the Merkin Concert Hall Box Office, (212) 501-3330.
