"...undoubtedly one of the most stimulating percussionists on the planet." Andy Hamilton, Jazz Review (6/01)

Location One is happy to announce a solo performance by composer and performer Gerry Hemingway. Since 1974, Hemingway has worked as both a solo and an ensemble musician. Hemingway has led numerous groups including, most recently, a quartet with Ellery Eskelin, Ray Anderson and Mark Dresser, and worked in collaborative groups with Georg Graewe, Ernst Reijseger, Marilyn Crispell, Tambastics, BassDrumBone, Thomas Lehn, John Butcher and many others.

Gerry Hemingway: "As a composer and a performer, the solo performance is like a lighthouse in the fog of the many ambitious projects that are in development right now. When I started performing solo concerts back in 1974, it offered the most clear-cut path to crystallizing my ideas as a player and a writer. Of late I have been consumed with a recording project of "Songs," due to be completed for the German label Between the Lines in mid December. That project and the composing I have done for a Guggenheim fellowship; a Concerto for three improvisers and Orchestra has left me with some new ideas about color combination, juxtaposition and rhythmic interplay. The pieces I will perform on October 20th at Location One will combine some new electro-acoustic work, including one piece for multi-speakers. The electronics will feature midi-triggered sampling; often working with illusory relationships between the acoustic drums and the sampled sounds. I will also perform some new and a few older works for the drum set alone. I've been working a lot on grooves that elasticize and fracture punctuated rhythms while keeping true to a steady undercurrent of delineated time."

"Hemingway is an extraordinary and highly original drummer. Using mallets or his hands more frequently than sticks, and preferring arcs of rhythm to a continuous beat, he shapes his solo pieces with concern for dynamic balance and thematic continuity. While Hemingway is not averse to employing unconventional techniques, in his hands the uncommon effect never becomes an end in itself." Bob Blumenthal, Boston Globe (2/97)

"...Hemingway has adapted "abstract" techniques of tape manipulation to create non-programmatic sound images (i.e., not imitations of visual images) that suggest the vagaries of Nature, the three dimensionality of sculpture and a belief in ghosts." Art Lange, Fanfare (10/96)
