Charles Chapman is a professor in the guitar department at Berklee College of Music where he has taught since 1972. A well-known writer, he has over 400 published articles and reviews in such magazines as "Downbeat," "All About Jazz," Acoustic Guitar," among numerous others.

His latest instruction paperback, MEL BAYs MUSIC ESSENTIALS: BASIC MUSIC THEORY FOR ALL INTSTRUMENTS is a helpful concise guide and explains well what it sets out to do. It contains a foreword plus three chapters.

Chapter One covers Theory. Chapter Two covers harmony. Chapter Three covers notation. As a quick reference this paperback is one of the best published recently and the information on notation is valuable to the beginning student of a musical instrument as are the chapters on theory and harmony.

In Chapter Two on harmony scale degrees and diatonic chords and related information is shared with the reader. In Chapter One on theory there is much information including articulations and key signatures and the use of tempo. Excellent. Clearly-written.'Charles Chapmans concise music essentials book is an ideal gift for any student just beginning to learn an instrument It is also a nice reference to have around!'
