A gem from two of the coolest - in virtually every sense - sax fellows in jazz history is back in print thanks to the folks at Koch Jazz. Here these hepcats balance the oft-maligned cool school of the early/mid-1950s with some hot bebop playing. They drive the hell out of Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee" and show how to wail the blues with reserve & subtlety on Oscar Pettiford's "Don't Squawk." The spirits of Papa Tristano AND Parker hover over the proceedings, and the contrast is exhilarating. Sal Mosca & Billy Bauer are the tart lemon & lime twists in this coolbop cocktail. Need I add that Konitz (who was playing free improv when Ornette Coleman was still playing R&B in Texas) and Marsh sounds like J.S. Bach on their respective horns (if Bach roomed with Benny Carter, that is)? The presence of Pettiford makes this set all the more valuable, and Kenny Clarke is the superbly swinging, self-effacing drummer of them all. Three Thumbs Up!
