Joanne Brackeen’s
Pink Elephant Magic is a wonderful showcase for her imaginative, piano work. It is her twenty-second release as a leader, and on this recording,Brackeen leads an ensemble of immense talent. Her sidemen read like a who’s who in contemporary jazz. Nicholas Payton, Chris Potter, Kurt Elling, Dave Liebman, and John Patitucci are all well respected musicians in the music world.
The musical styles on
Pink Magic Elephant vary from straight-ahead bebop, Spanish-influenced music, rhythm and blues, and dreamy ballads. On the title track, Brackeen sounds at first like Dave Brubeck, but then moves into her own brand of playing. This tune takes the listener on a roller coaster ride, full of dips, and turns, and unexpected twists. Another great tune is Brubeck’s ballad,
Strange Meadowlark, with Joanne Brackeen alone at the piano.
Pink Elephant Magic is a must-have for those music lovers who really enjoy listening to excellent, piano music.
