Every genre in jazz has its young lions. The contemporary jazz style boasts of Cyrus Chestnut and the traditionalists sing the praises of Andy Fielding. Andy's roots are firmly planted in stride and ragtime with the likes of Eubie Blake, Earl Hines and Dave McKenna.
The young pianist is becoming a mainstay feature artist with Arbors Jazz, and with just cause. His dedication to the vintage style and "near flawless" execution are outdone only by his sense of adventure. This CD is loaded with older material but Fielding outdoes himself by throwing in a "stride" version of Dizzy's "Night In Tunisia". A highlight of the session is his own composition, A Ride On The River, a beautiful rag in the classic style.
Other composers are not forgotten and you'll hear material by Hoagy Carmichael, Antonio Carlos Jobim, James P. Johnson, George Gershwin and Ray Noble. Andy includes "Cat's Cradle" penned by his idol Dave McKenna. The 14 song set ends with the performer's own Arbors Blues.
Among solo pianists in the classic style, Andy Fielding is destined for great things. You may also wish to check out his other recent CD for Arbors titled "Tunes For Tommy" reviewed here a few months ago.
