A few weeks ago, we reviewed the Hawaiian slack key guitar work of Led Kaapana. Kaapana and Gabby Pahinui (1921-1980) were the absolute masters of this unique and interesting style of improvised music.
Bla Pahinui is Gabby’s son and carries on his father’s tradition. Bla is featured here in solo performance of his own and his Dad’s material. Bla was actually unaware of the microphones and of the fact that he was being recorded. There was no set list and no planning. This was just an "off the cuff’ set for some very appreciative fans.
Fans of slack key music will love this collection of beautifully played guitar. However, I feel that jazz enthusiasts will not find it as captivating as the work of Led Kaapana. This is my own opinion and does not reflect badly on Bla Pahinui’s artistry. The singer exhibits a great respect for tradition and gives a highly emotional performance. Students of acoustic guitar styles will learn much from this album.
