Sultry Serenade by James Chirillo

Veteran guitarist James Chirillo's first record as a leader is impressive, if not just for Chirillo's virtuosity, for the diversity put forth in this 13 song set. Having worked with a huge roster of impressive names, including Vic Damone, Marilyn Maye Eddie Durham, and Benny Goodman, Chirillo's style, while very traditional in sound and nature, is offset by his ability to tackle a diverse spectrum of styles. The tracks touch everything from vocal led acoustic bossa (track 2, "I Love You Samantha"), to quirky contemporary cuts such as Counterpoise # 2 For Guitar & Trumpet (track 4), written expressly for Mr. Chirillo by his teacher, trumpeter/composer John Carisi. Other choice tracks include Bourbon Street Parade, If I Only Had A Brain, Elend, and Fancifree (one of 2 Chirillo originals featured on this CD).

If you enjoy the styles of Barney Kessel and Tal Farlow, you will enjoy James Chirillo, and are certain to find something for everyone on his impressive debut in the spotlight.
