Eddie Severn's credits include playing lead trumpet with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, directing the Edinburgh University Jazz Orchestra as well as many solo appearances and commercial performances. In addition to composing for his own group he has written many commissions, including one for Kenny Wheeler's Glasgow Jazz Festival appearance. Severn's solos are creative, his trumpet work exciting. and like Wheeler, his tone on flugel is warm.

Severn's output tends to be introspective yet full of innovation as the group probes nuances and turns up the unexpected. Plenty goes on between his muted "Just a Moment"opening and "And Finally." The ballad "Still Waiting" presents his fiery side. In "Lost World" a simple phrase and counterpoint lead to an adventurous soprano solo by Phil Bancroft . Bancroft''s tenor is featured on Harold Land's "Rapture". Bassist Caribé contributes "Jobiniana"where he plays guitar and "Long Time No C"which lives up to its title. There's a light-hearted Czech melody "Sunflower", Herbie Hancock's "Dolphin Dance" at ballad tempo and a "Yesterdays" that evokes Clifford Brown. A highlight is "Very Early" where Severn and pianist Harrison pay imaginative homage to Bill Evans' lyricism.

This music is challenging, unconventional and proof that jazz is alive and well in Scotland, A good deal of credit should go to the drumming doctor , Tom Bancroft, who not only appears on this CD with brother Phil, but has given impetus to that art form through his founding of Caber Music.
