Renaissance by Rémi Bolduc

Rémi Bolduc is an alto sax player in the Montreal scene, unfortunately not that well known outside Quebec. This release, Renaissance, an outstanding contemporary bebop recording on the Effendi label, has hopefully introduced the rest of the jazz world to his talent. Bolduc is one of those artists with the ability to combine outstanding technique and smart musical sense. Bolduc is backed up by a rhythm section that really cooks - Dave Laing on drums, Tommy Babin on bass and Bryn Roberts on piano. Bolduc composed six of the nine tracks on this release, painting a diverse palette along the way, with the lightning fast Goldcheck, a bouncy tune called Lego, and the mysterious Berceuse. This quartet does a great job together, displaying some youthful energy and mature musical ability.
