Sweet Oblivious Antidote by Perpetual Groove

Perpetual Groove is an improvisational rock quartet from Savannah, GA that has apparently grown a sizeable fan base based in large part on their free CD promotions. They’re a sort of electronic jam band, though the instrumentation doesn’t point in that direction. Brock Butler plays guitars and mandolin and offers vocals on a couple of pieces, Adam Perry contributes bass guitar, keyboardist Matt McDonald fills most of the spaces and drums and percussion are supplied by Albert Suttle. There are hints of Brand X, Ambrosia and Todd Rundgren in the mix, though this is certainly a modern jazz/rock band with a modern sensibility, and masters of studio techniques that create much more sound than one might expect from a quartet. The name is appropriate. The grooves are endless and generally enjoyable. Fans of Phish may find them more enjoyable than fans of Weather Report, though they are an accomplished group able to transcend pigeonholes.
