An exceptionally tasteful outing for this Washington D.C. big band. The arrangments are allow for well-structured solos. Steve Fidyk is an excellent big band drummer playing with an ensemble, not intrusive but providing a solid basis for tunes that are long on musicality and devoid of showy pyrotechnics.
There is a Latin-flavored arrangement of Shearing's "Lullaby of Birdland" thatgives the oft performed tune new life. A wistfully introspective reading of "Chelsea Bridge" by Billy Strayhorn that has a lovely solo on alto sax by Bill Mulligan. This is an aggregation deserving of a wider audience for itsconsistently higher caliber of musicianship.
