Brazilian singer Virginia Rodrigues has, to put it mildly, a most distinctive voice: it’s deep and full-bodied, a bit dusky and almost husky - a bit like the late Nina Simone’s, in fact. Ms. VR’s voice carries so much poise, dignity and gentle, unguarded elegance that it’s almost too-beautiful to listen to. It fits the music perfectly: a lively, casually ebullient bossa nova framework that takes in gospel, jazz and classical overtones without a hint of pretension or awkwardness. VR doesn’t merely "sing" these songs - she embraces them with her voice, caressing them with it, bring out all the beauty she can. If you appreciate the tres moderne, melodious Brazilian sounds of Caetano Veloso and Milton Nascimento, you must hear this latest platter by Virginia Rodrigues.
