Every once in a while a hot CD catches the attention of DJs across the country. Back On Track is one that did, even before its official release in October.Finger Roll is the name of Dennis Nelson’s band and they are back with even more of what their fans crave smooth, yet spunky and upbeat tunes Mellow guitar rolls with muted sax fill-ins keep the entire album all the way live.Inspired by Roy Clark and Jimi Hendrix, Nelson has captured the sound of crossover not sophisticated or removed, but involved with his listeners on all levels.During the 70s, Nelson played in a group called Cosmic Funk doing soul and funk, a sound he transferred to the jazz arena.
Nelson describes his playing as rock licks with a jazz approach.Back On Track features a couple grooves with Otis Williams, founding member of the original Temptations. My Girl is done with a true sense of soul.Light My fire, is a smooth version, very listenable.Under The Radar caught the attention of DJ Carmen Brown, Mobile, Alabama.
Brown was so impressed with the entire album, she sent word to local jazz circles of Nelson’s new work. The rest is history.Back On Track is on Bama Sweet Records, a label Nelson co-founded.
