Just as the title Cool Breeze
implies, this is a CD full of very breezy, easy on the ears music. There isn’t any youthful angst, bluesy brooding over a lost love or one’s particular position in the social strata of life, nor any strong political statements or positions on any particular issues expressed here. The listener could surmise that if there is a position or philosophical agenda present in this music, it would be to relax, take your shoes off, have a cold refreshing beverage and wiggle your toes in the sand while watching the surf roll to and fro. Kohala, a group from Hawaii comprised of guitarists, Kevin Teves, Michael Brotman and Charlie Recaido draws upon a number of musical influences including jazz in their contrapuntal weave of a light, gossamer texture of sound.
Of the eleven selections that comprise the just over forty seven minutes of music, seven are originals by Brotman, with one by Teves. The group also records "I Will" by Lennon and McCartney, "Sunlight Moonlight" by Liko Martin and "Manatsuno Kajitsu" by Keisuke Kuwata. The format for all of the tunes is basically the same with Brotman taking the lead on nylon string guitar with Teves and Recaido filling out the accompaniment on steel string guitars. The group also includes some very light percussion on a few selections.
