‘Bedroom Communities 02. Relounge’ is a compilation presented by Kriztal Entertainment and compiled and mixed by Torsten Martens aka Monophonic. The literature describes the music as being appropriate "for those ‘apres amour’ hours", and given the title you would expect it to be a collection of romantic - or at least slow tempo - tracks, but that’s not really the case. It really sounds more like a laid-back dance set, the kind of thing you could either move to or play as background music for some type of hip social event.
The majority of the music is loop-based remixes. Some people underestimate the level of creativity necessary to create a great remix. It is an art form in and of itself. But it can be difficult to gauge the level of artistic achievement if one is not familiar with the original material. In other words, it’s hard to judge the value of the ‘after’ if you’re not privy to the before. I’m not an avid listener of dance music, so I am not familiar with any of these artists or the sources of their musical inspiration, but I found it a pleasant listen, nonetheless.
Being the type of loop driven music that this is, it is largely groove-based. These aren’t pop songs with catchy hooks and syrupy lyrics. Most of it (10 of the 13 tracks) are basically instrumentals and are fairly static creations, without a lot of harmonic or melodic movement. The one exception is the fairly straight-forward reading of the Stylistics’ classic "People Make The World Go Round", presented here by Innerzone Orchestra. Many influences are present on these tracks, from the dub/reggae inspired "Running From Love" by Freddie Cruger featuring ADL, to the Middle Eastern-flavored "The Place To Be" by Zeb to the spoken word of "Do Your Dance" by RAS. There are even a couple of jazz-based tracks; "Mellow Love" by Dugsoul and "Grandma’s Rocking Chair" by Olli Ahvenlahti are two of the best.
I wouldn’t call this a jazz album, but it’d be perfect played nice and low as an accessory to a great bottle of wine and matching one-on-one conversation, or as the soundtrack to a hot dinner party with some of your coolest friends and associates.
