One wouldn’t usually associate wonderfully ‘wild and techno’ WARP RECORDS with jazz. And then along came Squarepusher.
Still heavily comprised of electric sound, his latest work ‘Ultravisitor’ is an intelligent and multilayered attempt at juggling with different styles - mainly jazz, synthetic noise and even contemporary taste, at times reaching magnetic levels of lyrical intensity. Guitar insertions range from Mike Stern to suggestions of early-music alchemy.‘Iambic 9 Poetry’ sets the emotional pace of the album, with jazz meeting psychedelia and amazingly resolving into d ‘n’ b (Squarepusher’s ability as bassist and drummer is clearly reflected into his unrestrained sense of rhythm.)Not to be missed.
