Sanctuary by Charlie Musselwhite

Can you believe it? Charlie Musselwhite has been on the scene for 40 years and released 33 albums. Here comes Number 34.

In a departure from his normal fare, the harmonica legend offers Sanctuary, a contemplative production reflecting his years in the music industry. Musselwhite’s delivers his message via his own compositions and those of Randy Newman, Ben Harper and others. While the bluesman’s recent offerings leaned toward vocal performances, he has not forgotten his harp fans and includes three instrumental tracks. Of these, Alicia penned by Eddie Harris is particularly beautiful. It’s not a track that will be played only once. Musselwhite’s own Route 19 and the haunting Shadow People penned by all the band members are standouts too.

Charlie Musselwhite’s entire approach to the album makes it very attractive to a wide audience without alienating his hardcore blues followers. The title tune is one of the most engaging blues performances I’ve heard in a while. This is a very easy CD to like.

Sanctuary will hit the shelves on April 6, 2004.
