September 21 marks the release of Takin’ It Easy, E.G. Kight’s fourth CD for Blue South Records. The Georgia born W.C. Handy nominee strikes a pleasing chord with the new album. E.G. Kight is a gutsy blues-gal and a fine writer. Happily, this release offers eight originals mixed with tunes by such diverse composers as Duke Ellington and guitarist Dickie Betts. Particularly striking is E.G.’s beautiful ballad When You Were Mine featuring some pretty passages by tenor-man Greg Piccolo from Roomful Of Blues. The singer/guitarist follows up with Ellington’s I Ain’t Got Nothin’ But The Blues. Acoustic blues fans will delight in E.G. Kight’s delivery and arrangements. Judicious use of harmonica, dobro, acoustic bass and piano add so much to my enjoyment of her music. It’s great to hear the wonderful Ann Rabson gracing two songs on piano. I’ve loved Rabson’s piano style for years and felt she didn’t play the instrument often enough. Ann joins E.G. on I Don’t Want To Start Over and another touching Kight composition Coming Out Of The Pain. The latter is this writer’s personal favorite track.
