Five years after their successful album That’s For Sure, the three progressive jazz stars returned to Hilversum, Holland for a re-match. Marc Copland, John Abercrombie and Kenny Wheeler require no introduction. That’s a fact echoed by Marc Copland’s sparse liner notes. The pianist merely enforces his great admiration of the other players. The CD even arrives on the reviewer’s desk with no promotional blurb.

With the exception of Nat Adderley’s Jive Sambaand Vernon Duke’s Taking A Chance On Love, all tracks are penned by the trio’s members. The listener feels like an eavesdropper listening to a conversation between friends. Abercrombie, Wheeler and Copland are articulate, relaxed and extremely sensitive to each other’s contribution. While each will, at times, dominate the conversation, they never, never shout.

Brand New is breathtakingly fresh and interesting. Get ready for an hour of the most relaxed jazz you’ll ever hear!
