Strom by Serge Baghdassarians Boris Baltschun Alessandro Bosett

These four prominent European avant-garde denizens, attempt to alter the listener’s stream of consciousness partly due to stylizations brimming with intense multiphonics, and microtonal underpinnings. It’s hard to envision the sound shaping exercises rendered given the relatively normal instrumentation involved. On this outing, saxophonists Michel Doneda and Alessandro Bosetti pursue hissing sounds and trickling effects in collaboration with Boris Baltschun’s ever so subtle, sampler manipulations. Add to that, Serge Baghoassarians’ difficult to pinpoint, guitar permutations. Therefore, the quartet manipulates air in very abstract ways. At times, the overall muse could spur thoughts of what it might be like, uncovering vaulted secrets or perhaps viewing rays of light reflecting through a dark tunnel. Is it music? Well, it’s up to the listener’s discernment. Regardless, it isn’t music in the conventional sense as the quartet navigates shadowy alley ways, amid pieces that convey a liquefying effect. And the musicians do indeed stretch the boundaries of extremism along with a few slight nods to John Cage and other pioneering minds throughout these largely, mystifying works. (Recommended for the adventure seeker.... )
