Setting the tone for this CD, "State of Mind" is the title track showcasing Midon’s unique voice with highs and lows, as he sings, ‘ I want to be rich all a state of mind’, with Stevie Wonder playing harmonica, before shifting to the world of love in his next ballad, "If You’re Gonna Leave."
During his next offering, Midon teams with Jason Mraz in a duet for "Keep On Hoping," a plucky tune, upbeat, speaking of love, hoping to catch the attention of that special lady -- a delightful harmony of voices with airy background vocals.
"Mystery Girl" and "Waited All My Life" continue on a wistful journey of love, searching for the right woman to share life with.
Showing his skill on guitar, Midon performs the perky "Sunshine" while his soulful voice takes the listener to higher thoughts. Harmonica adds another layer of complexity to this composition; sounding like a Stevie Wonder style hit song.
African drums, with strong vocals by Midon, take a spiritual gospel tone on "I Would Do Anything" before closing out the CD with another thoughtful ballad: "All In Your Mind."
Raul Midon grew up in New Mexico, went to college in Miami, then moved to New York City. He began his musicianship on drums before turning to guitar.
State Of Mind shows Midon’s ability to move through a song, carrying the mood to states of love, somber thoughts of life and into rays of sun filled moments. Most songs on this CD were composed by Midon, though the Stevie Wonder influence shows throughout the album. Wonder also shows up, playing harmonica, for an extra treat.
