This Swedish improvising trio pushes the proverbial envelope a bit, largely due to Per Anders Nilsson’s computer manipulations, used as an improvising and counterbalancing vehicle. And with pianist Susanna Lindeborg and tenor saxophonist Ove Johansson, the music iterated here is teeming with asymmetrical rhythms, contrapuntal statements and animated exchanges. Nilsson’s computer generated sounds often firm up the rhythmic cycles, used as a base for his cohorts’ jazzy phrasings and frenetic, free-form endeavors. Nilsson also mimics jungle music while implementing subliminal and sometimes, eerie background treatments. Essentially, these notions have been explored an infinitum during the past several years, but the trio’s quality of ideas, great depth and noticeable sense of commitment radiates 3-D type qualities. In addition, this recording is enhanced by superior audio processing techniques, which is a component that adds color and luster to the overall proceedings. On the piece titled "Sidebands," Johansson’s echo-laden sax work casts an interesting mindset to his band-mates’ odd-metered pulses and quaintly executed ostinatos. And then on "Like Jazz (return)," Lindeborg and Johansson use space as an enhancer for Nilsson’s synth-bass type maneuvers. Ultimately, this trio rises above the norm throughout these forward-reaching, jazz inspired tone poems. Nilsson’s clever and meaningful use of electronics, serve as the differentiator here.
