Nancy Wilson continues to craft some of the most beautiful jazz vocals around. With the musicians on this collection, she is in fine company and her voice is perfect for the songs selected.
Nancy Wilson has a way about her that when she takes on a song, it is, simply put, her song. She gives the jazz listening audience some great, intimate ballads with a genuine swinging big band. Her take on Frank Sinatra's classic "This Is All I Ask" is perfectly frank and well-done, a jewel in this collection of songs, and it features Bob Mintzer on tenor saxophone.
There are eleven songs in the CD collection. Among them are "This Is All I Ask," "Take Love Easy," "Turned To Blue" (which features lyrics from the poem, "My Life Has Turned to Blue" by Dr. Maya Angelou), "Knitting Class" which features Jimmy Heath on tenor saxophone, "Be My Love" which features Hubert Laws on flute, "Taking A Chance On Love," "Just Once," "These Golden Years," "I Don't Remember Ever Growing Up," "Old Folks," and "I'll Be Seeing You" featuring Dr. Billy Taylor on piano and Mikhait Istomin on cello.
These musicians are wonderfully attuned to the voice stylings of Nancy Wilson. Each one of the many are perfectly in stride with her vocals! Llew Matthews' piano performances are among the finest found anywhere in contemporay jazz piano, and his solo work is superb on every song he plays. An excellent example of Llew Matthews' playing is found on the memorable rendition of "Be My Love" which also features Hubert Laws on flute, Jennifer Conner on alto flute and flute, and other fine musicians.
Nancy Wilson shines on each song. Give a listen to the mood she successfully creates with pianist Dr. Billy Taylor on "I'll Be Seeing You." This is a perfect rendition of this old classic! "Just Once" and "Old Folks" are another couple of fine songs sung true and to the point as only Nancy Wilson can sing them. Dave Samuels excels on vibraphone alongside John Clayton on bass and Llew Matthews on piano with "Just Once." "These Golden Years" is a sweet winner, featuring Tom Scott on tenor saxophone, Jennifer Conner on alto flute and flute, Mike Tomaro on clarinet and bass clarinet, Jay Ashby on muted trombone, Llew Matthews on piano, John Clayton on bass, and the innovative Roy McCurdy on drums.
Another special attraction to this CD collection is the featuring of least one soloist on every track. Steel pan master Andy Narell appears on "I Don't Remember Ever Growing Up" with Aton Yavnai on piano. MCG Jazz is a nonprofit arts organization located in Pittsburg, PA and has won three GRAMMY Awards.
This is classic Nancy Wilson. Highly recommended. Get a copy for yourself and a friend. A fine collection to savor over a nice cup of coffee with a lover! Congratulations to Nancy Wilson for an outstanding, memorable jazz outing.
