Douglas performs infrequently, so her recordings are the best opportunity to hear her music. The new CD is full of intimate songs tastefully performed by Douglas and a group of strong Southern California players. There is straight-ahead jazz, blues, ballads, and Latin-flavored numbers. No matter the style, there is a timeless quality to Douglas’ music. Her songs focus on universal themes and emotions like love, loss, and desire, and her warm, easy delivery adds to the accessibility of the music. There is nothing dated about the material. Douglas’ songs are introspective, providing life lessons without the sermon.
"Now, experience/Doesn’t bring wisdom/But at least it opens your eyes/The good times help you/Live for tomorrow/The bad times you learn to abide," she sings on the bluesy, yet bright, "Before Life Got To You."
Several of the songs sound like they would have been right at home in the Peggy Lee or Rosemary Clooney songbook. The breezy "Look What You’ve Done Now" is dedicated to the memory of Nat King Cole.
The CD was recorded in 2005. Unfinished Business was arranged and conducted by Mundell Lowe.
