Internationally Known Jazz Bassist Graduates to a Heavenly Orchestra

Vinnie Burke,(aka Vincenzo Bucci, Vincent James Bucci), internationally known jazz bassist graduated to a heavenly orchestra on February 1, 2002 from his home in Springfield, New Jersey. Born in Newark, New Jersey on March 15, 1921, Vinnie began playing music at the age of 5 years old, starting with the violin, then moving on to the guitar and finally finding a perfect jazz sound with a 5 string bass fiddle. His resume is extensive with engagements at the Blue Note, the Half Note, the Copacabana, Birdland, Basin Street, Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, the United Nations, the Waldorf Astoria just to name a few. As leader of the band, his personnel included Clarke Terry, Phil Woods, Illinois Jacquet, Freddie Hubbard, Roy Eldridge, Cannonball Adderly, Tal Farlow and many others. He played with Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Cy Coleman, Marian MacPartland, Billie Holiday, Chris Connors, Buddy Rich, Benny Goodman and many more. Vinnie recorded on Paramount, Jubilee, Xanadu, Bethlehem, King, ABC Paramount, Savoy, RCA and Verve recording labels. His television engagements included the Art Ford Jazz Party, the Tonight Show, the General Electric Show, the Perry Como Show, the Jack Parr Show, the Ernie Kovacs Show, the Kate Smith Show and Goodman's 25th Anniversary. He was a member of the musicians' unions in both New York and New Jersey for many years. Vinnie is included as one of the great contributors to the Newark Jazz scene. As a concerned citizen of Newark, Vinnie was the founder and president of Vailsburg's Block Association, urging community effort and support to help fight crime in the 70's and 80's. Vinnie spent some winter months in Palm Beach, Florida with engagements at Chuck and Harold's Restaurant, the Breakers Hotel, the Chesterfield Hotel and Charley's Crab. His last long engagement was at Liantonio's Restaurant in Kenilworth, New Jersey. He also played for the Golf Association at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in the summer of 2000.
