Toronto Jazz Vocalist Melissa Stylianou

"A versatile, lively and sassy singer"  - Geoff Chapman, The Toronto Star

Over the past three years Melissa Stylianou has built a reputation as one of Canada's top jazz vocalists. Her sultry singing, startling range and impeccable yet expressive technique have been commanding loyal home-base audiences in Toronto, across Canada and the United States. Some of Canada's finest musicians regularly play with Melissa. Even Harry Connick, Jr. is a fan after an all night jam at the Rex Hotel.

"bachelorette*" builds on the success of her debut album "it never entered my mind... "  which was released in January 1999.  The album is a collection of brilliant songs that couldn't be more diverse: from the intimacy of Harold Arlen's "A Sleepin' Bee" to a raucous reading of Tom Waits' "Little Boy Blue" right up to a provocative performance of the title tune, Bjork's "Bachelorette". Other tunes include the lilting "Crooked Waltz" by Toronto's Cate Friesen, while the well-known songwriter Arlene Bishop provides a perfect lyric for Melissa's original ballad "The Lonely Want to Be" (co-written with Kim Ratcliffe).

The musicians surrounding Melissa on "bachelorette*"  are a testament to her gifts: Guitarist Kim Ratcliffe (Holly Cole, Carol Welsman), pianist Nancy Walker (Victor Bateman, John Geggie Trio) bassist Artie Roth (Rez Abassi, The Greg Runions Group), drummer Ted Warren (Norma Winstone, The Boss Brass) and well-known soloist John MacLeod (Nancy Wilson, Zoot Sims) on trumpet and flugelhorn.

Like Melissa, "bachelorette*" is a supremely musical textured work that  pulsates with raw energy while maintaining a delicate balance between subtlety and sinew.  Melissa's recordings, "it never entered my mind..." and "bachelorette*", are available online through
