Ah, the Sweetest Sound Jazz in June Music Festival is Here!
Norman, OK The Norman Arts Council is pleased to highlight the 23rd annual Jazz in June music festival in this month. The festival will take place from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. June 22 and from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. June 23 at Brookhaven Village located at NW 36th and Robinson and from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. June 24 at Andrews Park located at Daws St. and Webster in downtown Norman.
Thursday night’s jazz festivities will begin with the Red Rhythm Band performing at 7 p.m. followed by the Sean Costello Band at 8 p.m. Friday night will begin with a performance by the Norman North High School Jazz Choir at 7 p.m. continuing with the Brian Gorrell Band at 8 p.m. and Jeanie Bryson at 9 p.m.
Saturday morning, Norman North High School, located at 1809 Stubbeman, will host several education clinics beginning with voice instruction at 11 a.m. with Jeanie Bryson. Clinics will continue throughout the afternoon with acoustic guitar instruction at 12 p.m. with Joe Brennen, piano instruction at 1 p.m. with Eric Byrd and trumpet instruction at 2 p.m. with Marcus Belgrave.
Musical performances will continue throughout the night at Andrews Park on Saturday. Start the night off at 6 p.m. with a performance by the Christopher Wray Quartet followed by Eric Byrd at 7 p.m. and Marcus Belgrave’s Octet tribute to Louis Armstrong at 8 p.m. The host band, Garrett ‘Big G’ Jacobson will perform from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. at a location yet to be announced. All are welcome to attend this free event.
Several new art exhibits will also take place this month beginning with an exhibit from artist Joyce Harris. She will be displaying a variety of oil, watercolor and pastel paintings at the Norman Arts Council’s gallery located at 220 E. Main, Suite 101, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. An opening for Joyce’s exhibit will take place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, June 16. Please visit www.normanarts.org or call 405.360.1162 for updated events.
The Performing Arts Studio, located at 200 S. Jones, will be displaying the work of mother and daughter Beverly and Medeia Herndon this month. Their work consists of oriental brushwork and mixed media art. An opening reception will take place June 4 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Please visit www.thepas.org for more information.
The Norman Firehouse Arts Center will be hosting a benefit clay auction at 6:30 p.m. at the Sarkey’s Foundation, located at 530 E. Main on June 9.
