In its 85 years of operation the Caverns has set the stage for some of jazz musicians legendary musicians and recordings including the Ramsey Lewis Trio's Grammy winning album The In Crowd Live at Bohemian Caverns which was recorded live at the Caverns in 1965. Many Jazz giants played the Caverns including Miles Davis Ella Fitzgerald John Coltrane Louis Armstrong Thelonious Monk Billie Holiday Duke Ellington and many others.
Today Bohemian Caverns continues to build upon its long legacy of presenting great live music to Washington DC. Over the past 12 months the Caverns has hosted some of the top names in jazz including legends such as Ron Carter and Benny Golson as well as several young lions of the music like the Robert Glasper Trio. The Caverns is also very excited to announce two upcoming special events. Master saxophonist Pharoah Saunders will make a rare club appearance this spring and the club is in talks with another artist to host a live album recording this year as well.
Bohemian Caverns began its operations in 1926 under the name Club Caverns. The Caverns was located on U Street the cultural center of Washington. The Club would eventually take on the name Bohemian Caverns in 1959.
The Caverns is currently owned and managed by Omrao Brown. Since taking over the direction of the club in 2006 Brown has earned critical acclaim for his leadership in the reclamation of the club. "It was clear when we took over that the Caverns had lost touch with the community of musicians and music fans. We've focused on rebuilding our relationships with musicians and fans. The musicians and our customers know that we are committed to great music and unforgettable experiences for music lovers." Recently Bohemian Caverns was tauted by the Washington City Paper as the city's best jazz club.
Bohemian Caverns features weekly national and regional jazz acts every Friday and Saturday night. The club has also instituted a house big band the Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra which performs every Monday night. The Caverns schedule can be found at www.bohemiancaverns.com.
