Dan Papirany Trio new album Session One

The Dan Papirany Trio are releasing their NZ debut album "Session One" on Ode’s new jazz label MANU JAZZ. This is the second new release on MANU JAZZ in the past year (the first was the Frank Gibson Quartet album "Rainbow Bridge" MANU2023). The Dan Papirany Trio features Israeli born pianist Dan Papirany (piano), Pete McGregor (bass) and Owen Kneebone (drums). Session One features 7 standards tunes played with great sensitivity and feel, in the style of the late Bill Evans Trio, including: "Stella by starlight" & "You don’t know what love is". Session One was recorded live in Auckland in March 2004. Official album launch is at MLC Bar, 380 Queen Street, Auckland on Thursday November 11, 6pm.

A Sample of the recording can be found at www.danpapirany.com/jazz.htm Including one full mp3 download "Nobody else but me". The album is now available from Ode Records.

"This trio does so much with the lightest touch. With artfully subtle counterpoint, from drums and bass, pianist Dan Papirany comps and solos with equal facility. Papirany even gives the bass player room to stretch out in this most sincere homage to Bill Evans". (Editor, Music Download.com) "Papirany is an impressive pianist whose style is marked by soft left hand chording, cleanly articulated right hand melodies and liberal use of space. Bill Evans is a clear influence." (Will York Listen.com) "Dan has some amazing piano hands, with his effortless instrumental sliding between mellow rolls and upbeat jazz. It makes you realize why the piano is such a powerful instrument". (downloadmusic.com)

BIOGRAPHY: Israeli born Dan Papirany (b. March 07, 1967) is a Jazz pianist, bandleader, teacher and a composer whose compositions include some references and ideas borrowed from contemporary tunes and standard harmonies. Dan learned to play the drums as a teenager, and at 22 years of age enrolled at the Wellington Conservatorium of Music studying Jazz Drumming with Roger Sellers, and in his 3rd year he changed his major to Jazz piano. In 1999 Dan graduated from Massey University conservatorium of music with a bachelor of music performance. The foundation of his technique was laid in three years of study with Leigh Jackson (Wellington Jazz Tutor). Dan started performing with his own trio in Wellington at local bars, sometimes performing in a duo format at Wellington hotels, before moving to Auckland. Dan has performed in many venues in the North Island region, including performances in Jazz festivals and a current residency at the M.L.C Bar in Auckland. Dan’s playing style is quite often compared to the style of the great Jazz pianist Bill Evans. The current trio is sensitive and plays cool and bebop Jazz styles.
