fo/mo/deep Melds Passion with Improvisation in "A Beautiful Bang"

Columbus, OH/ April 25, 2012

In the '70s, bands like the Headhunters and Tower of Power fused elements of jazz with Afro vibes and R&B to create a titillating musical stew.  It was an unpredictable trip of cultural grooves that expanded not only the music but the social consciousness of America. Many have attempted to recreate this magical moment in time but few have successfully captured the unbridled passion of the message ... that was until fo/mo/deep released "A Beautiful Bang."

Known for their ability to "rekindle the classic and fundamental elements of funk, jazz, and all-around soul-penetrating goodness that is all too absent in today's music" (as declared by BusTown Music), fo/mo/deep of Columbus, Ohio is about to take the international music scene by storm.

"A Beautiful Bang" is the sophomore CD release for fo/mo/deep. Their first CD, "Eclecticism," received rave reviews. Rob Young of The Urban Flux declared, "Their unique groove uncoils with a twist of eclectic jazz/funk rhythms that's not heard often enough these days."  Known for their intelligently energetic and unpredictable shows, their concerts supporting the release of "Eclecticism" created a formidable reputation for this funk-infused band.

"A Beautiful Bang" masterfully transfers the insatiable energy of the band's live performances to the recording studio and pays respect to the diverse cultural heritage of American music. The songs engrave the canvas of the record with sizzling bursts of improvisation, while also capturing the emotional essence of more delicate instrumental conversations and flavors. Tastefully varied but cohesively melded, the music lives in the moment.

"The songs come from all over my life. We touch the blues, Afrobeat, Brazilian groove, funk, neo-soul and jazz. This CD is a lot more eclectic than our first," said bassist and bandleader Ron Holmes.

The 13 tracks on "A Beautiful Bang" take you on a funky journey that travels past the contemporary jazz grooves of "Jawjacka'" and "The Wanting" to a touch of old school with "Martini Blues" and "My Baby Gots' the Blues, Blues." The Latin jazz dance of "A Plethora of Pleasant Thoughts" sizzles, while the neo-soul/jazz flavor of "Da Ba Di Do (Sonrisa de Zoe)" uplifts. A hypnotic go-go undercurrent plants the groove alongside Brazilian infused Afro-beats in "A Beautiful Bang." The funk is in the house with "Mama said, Mama said," while the poetry flows in "The Road." Then, you have the hand-selected covers like the spoken-word saxual super funk of "Gentleman" (Fela Kuti), the delightful duet of sax & piano on "Naima" (John Coltrane), the reggae treatment on "Red Clay" (Freddie Hubbard) and the sweet jazz/funk fusion of "Montara" (Bobby Hutcherson). This CD has it all.
